30 OCTOBER 2009

Time: 8:08am
What: 20 minutes asana / 20 minutes seated practice
Focus: Third Foundation / Exercises 9 - 12 (Ana-)

Need to read the next focus... I think perhaps I am behind schedule.

Practice was a little bit of a comedic routine. As I'm sure you've noticed, we have a new puppy. Her name is Ella and she is a 10-week old pug/cocker mix. She is adorable, chews, plays, and is constantly at our heels.

Ella seems to think that yoga mats are good chew toys. As per the puppy training instructions, we are to remove the non-chewable item from the puppy, firmly say no, and then give her the proper chew toy. Asana practice involved doing postures, noticing breath, noticing puppy chewing on yoga mat, firmly saying no, giving puppy chew toy, continuing practice. When not chewing the yoga mat, Ella chose to chew on her toy ON the yoga mat. Postures were done around the puppy. Chaturunga dandasana with puppy under one's belly. Thought about something that Michael Stone discussed around being a parent and what responsible practice looks like... TBD.

Seated practice was a little more... calm. Ella chose to sleep on the meditation blanket beside my shin bones. Observed breath and mental formations. Happy for the quiet and the little bit of ease.

Moral of the story: Puppy parenting is hard work.

Oy! Tell me about it! Monica and I impulsively agreed to foster a six-month old puppy (Lab and Devil Dog mix, I think!) and so far the toll is:

three dead plants (among them, one I sooo loved, brought with me from Oregon over two years ago)

one chewed tree

myriad holes in the back yard

a totally destroyed couch and love seat (I am NOT exaggerating)

And after over $100 worth of toys, she still prefers what's left of the couch!

Can anyone say "Puppy Mind?" To watch her go from one thing to the next, and then be distracted while doing so by a third thing has been quite amusing and illuminating!

And then, after running her ragged with a red laser light at night on the local basketball court, watching her gallop after this little red light, making me laugh till I cry, she rests her head on my lap and I am at peace.

Ohhhh... the couch. :|

I absolutely agree on the laughter, the silliness, and the peace when they finally collapse from fatigue.
